Ever since PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) was released, the battle royale genre has become increasingly diverse. Today, there are so many great battle royale titles to choose from that it can be hard to decide.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the best Xbox battle royale games. For each, we’ll give you a quick background and explain the themes, gameplay elements, and number of players you can expect.

We’ve picked nine of Xbox’s most popular (and fun) battle royale games. Whether you’re looking for a classic modern warfare-themed shooter, a realistic racing game, or a fast-paced obstacle challenge, there’s something for you. Here they are, in no particular order:

1. Apex Legends

  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Android, iOS
  • Release date: 2019
  • Developer: Respawn Entertainment

Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale set in the Titanfall universe and featuring many of the popular series’ characters. Each match begins with a character selection phase, where you can choose one of 25 Legends, each with their own special powers and abilities.

You then start the game in an aircraft flying over an island. One of your squadmates will be designated “Jumpmaster” and will direct your fall to a place on the island where you can search for weapons and items before fighting other players. Over time, the playable area shrinks, forcing players to move closer and enter combat to stay alive.

In Apex Legends, each game involves sixty players split into groups of two or three. The gameplay is fast-paced, and it incorporates many elements from Titanfall, including sliding, climbing over objects, flying, and grappling.

2. Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0

  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows
  • Release date: 2022
  • Developer: Infinity Ward and Raven Software

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is another free-to-play battle royale game set in the Call of Duty universe in the modern era. Like in the original Warzone, players fight to be the last man standing on a map that keeps getting smaller as the game progresses.

When you die, you’re sent to the Gulag where you have a chance to respawn – you just have to beat another dead player in 1v1 combat. If you win, you’re sent out to parachute back down onto the map in a new location.

Each match has 150 players, and the game modes include solo, duo, trio, or quad teams. Other game modes are also available, including the faster-paced Resurgence mode and DMZ mode, in which you have to try and escape the map (instead of being the last team standing).

3. Fortnite Battle Royale

  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android
  • Release date: 2017
  • Developer: Epic Games

Fortnite is one of the most popular battle royale games ever and has even become an Olympic sport. In Fortnite, 100 players skydive from the floating Battle Bus and must find gear before fighting other players on a continually shrinking map.

The main difference with Fortnite is that you can build walls, platforms, and roofs as you fight. Some players have taken this to an extreme extent, being able to quickly put together massive structures to outplay and outposition their competition.

One of the best things about Fortnite is that Epic Games consistently adds new features, alters the map, and changes gameplay elements to keep the game as fresh as possible. And for those who don’t want to learn how to build quickly, there’s a Zero Build mode.

4. Realm Royale: Reforged

  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows
  • Release date: 2018
  • Developer: Heroic Leap Games

Realm Royale Reforged is a battle royale spin-off of the Paladins franchise. Players begin by choosing their character class (each has unique abilities) and then drop from an airship into a shrinking map. In the game, players must collect weapons and skills to battle against their enemies.

Realm Royale features two main game modes: Trios, where teams of three battle in a total of 100 players, and Realm Wars, where ten teams of ten battle on a map known as Primal Island. When you’re knocked down, you become a chicken. You can only transform back into your character if you can survive for a short period without being completely taken out.

One unique feature of Realm Royale is the ability to craft Epic and Legendary items and skills at Forges across the map. These items give you an edge over other players, so the Forge locations are often heavily contested.

5. Darwin Project

  • Available on: Xbox One
  • Release date: 2020
  • Developer: Scavengers Studio

Darwin Project is a free-to-player online battle royale game set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world. The idea is that a devastating Ice Age is approaching, and prisoners are being pitted against each other in a kind of science experiment that doubles as live entertainment.

You begin by choosing whether you’re a male or female inmate. Then, you’re spawned into an icy map with nine other participants, wielding only an ax and a bow. To stay alive longer than the other players, you must collect resources and craft items like arrows and campfires.

A unique and fun feature of the Darwin Project game is the ability to play as the Show Director. This is the 11th player in any match, and their goal is to increase the entertainment for players by using abilities (like gravity storms and zone restrictions) to affect the game’s flow.

6. Naraka: Bladepoint

  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Windows, PlayStation 5
  • Release date: 2022
  • Developer: 24 Entertainment

Naraka: Bladepoint is a free martial arts battle royale with a melee combat system. In Naraka: Bladepoint, you battle solo or trio against a maximum of 60 players. Each playable Hero has a different skill and ultimate ability. Once in the game, you search for various weapons, grapples, and armor before fighting your competitors.

As you battle, the safe zone shrinks to a random area on the map, and combat becomes more frequent. The most unique part of this game is the fast-paced melee combat. As you eliminate players, you can collect Darktide Coins and use these to upgrade your items and abilities.

7. Fall Guys

  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows, Nintendo Switch
  • Release date: 2020
  • Developer: Mediatonic

Fall Guys, previously known as Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, is a unique battle royale game in which you must race to be the last one standing. Rather than fighting other players, the goal is to be the first to pass all the obstacles and reach the end of the map.

Each game takes place on a confusing, fast-paced map with different obstacles to overcome. You’ll have to jump, grab, climb, and dive past moving objects, balance challenges, and other players to beat them to the finish line.

If you fall off the map, you’ll either be respawned or knocked out of the competition entirely, depending on the level. You’ll qualify for the next round if you’re among the first to get through to the end. Rounds continue until there are no other players left.

8. PUBG: Battlegrounds

A screenshot of PUBG: Battlegrounds
  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Android, iOS, Windows, PlayStation 4 and 5
  • Release date: 2017
  • Developer: PUBG Studios

PUBG: Battlegrounds was the first battle royale game developed, introducing the entire concept to gamers. In the game, you drop out of a plane with 99 other players as a solo, duo, or team of four.

You aim to find the best weapons, equipment, and armor. Then, as the map becomes smaller, you fight against other players, trying to remain the last one alive.

While PUBG is one of the oldest titles on this list, it retains a strong player base and is still one of the most enjoyable battle royales. New maps, equipment, and skins are constantly added, so the game constantly feels fresh—even though the graphics are a little outdated.

9. Forza Horizon 5: The Eliminator

A screenshot of Forza Horizon 5
  • Available on: Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Windows
  • Release date: 2021
  • Developer: Playground Games

The Eliminator is a game mode in Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horizon 5, where up to 72 players compete in a shrinking arena until there’s only one player left. The unique aspect of The Eliminator is that, instead of fighting other players with weapons, you’re racing them in a car.

In The Eliminator, you begin on a shrinking map and drive around looking for car upgrades. If you come across another player, you can challenge them to a Head-to-Head sprint where the loser gets eliminated from the game.

As time passes, the arena becomes smaller, and more players compete in Head-to-Head challenges. After the final stage, where the map has become around a sixteenth of the original map size, the Final Showdown will begin. A finish line will appear on the map, and all remaining players must race to be the first to cross the line, becoming the winner.

The Last One Standing

With a stack of new and unique titles popping up all the time, the battle royale genre isn’t going anywhere. From fighting games to shooters to racing sims, there really is a battle royale game for everyone. Hopefully, one or more of the titles in this list has piqued your interest—let us know in the comments below.
