Elden Ring has become a smash hit, being nominated and awarded multiple game of the year awards. From Software’s track record for developing immersive and incredibly difficult RPGs continues onward. However, many players have been waiting with bated breath for an expansion to this new title. Luckily, From Software plans on delivering, as the company has just announced the new Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Earlier today, From Software’s official Elden Ring Twitter account revealed the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC announcement.

While the DLC announcement is great news for fans, aside from some key art for the title, little information about the expansion has yet to be revealed. From Software states that the expansion is currently “in development”, and that’s about all we know.

Although this may be the only news for now, this has been a long time coming for fans of Elden Ring. That’s because every Dark Souls game before it has included DLC. Even the elusive Bloodborne, which yet remains to get a PC port, had DLC content released after its initial launch.

It would make sense, then, for Elden Ring to join its brethren in having an expansion for players to continue their journey in. For now, though, many mysteries remain.

The first thing to consider is the name of the expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. Since the Erdtree is the focus of the story, holding the power of the Elden Ring, your choices affect its fate at the end of the game. With six different endings available, how will this affect how the DLC plays out? Since each ending of Elden Ring is different, surely there’d be different major plot changes to the overall DLC.

Although, if From Software is aiming to sidestep this issue, the DLC could take place before the final confrontation at the Erdtree. However, this would go against the name of the DLC, “Shadow of the Erdtree,” which implies that the DLC takes place after the final confrontation.

But alas, this is all speculation. From Software has yet to elaborate, no doubt playing its cards close to its chest. When any new information is revealed, we’ll be sure to let you know.
