On October 6, 2026, Gears of War: E-Day launches as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and cloud gaming. If you subscribe to either tier, you don’t need to buy it. Among the other games releasing October 6-8, Xbox’s own weekly roundup also tags Echo Weaver (October 8) for Game Pass, and E-Day arrives with strong reviews behind it.
What Happened
Pure Xbox reported on October 4 that three day-one Game Pass titles land between October 6 and 8. That report pulls together several Xbox Wire posts from the past three weeks. Here is what each official source says. Sources were checked October 4-5, 2026.
September 15: Game Pass wave two. Xbox Wire’s September 2026 wave-two Game Pass post lists Gears of War: E-Day as a day-one release on October 6 for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. This is the core confirmation. Subscribers on those tiers get the game at launch at no extra cost.
September 17: Gone gold and pre-install. Xbox Wire announced E-Day had gone gold, meaning the final build was finished. The same post said pre-installation would open September 29 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific. That post also published PC minimum and recommended specs, but only as an image, so check that post directly before you download on PC.
October 1: Early access begins. Xbox Wire’s early access launch trailer post marked the start of early access on October 1 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific. Premium Edition owners got up to five days of early play. So did Game Pass Ultimate members who bought the Premium Upgrade.
October 6: Worldwide launch. The full release goes live on October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific / 15:00 UTC. That’s when Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members without the upgrade can start playing.
October 2: Next Week on Xbox. Xbox Wire’s weekly release roundup for October 5 to 9 lists the rest of the window. It tags Echo Weaver, a time-loop Metroidvania out October 8, as both Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere. It also lists Neon Abyss 2, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival and Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts for October 8.
Which October 6-8 games are confirmed day-one on Game Pass?
This is where headlines and official text don’t fully line up. Pure Xbox’s headline says “three.” In Xbox Wire’s October 2 roundup, two October 6-8 games carry a Game Pass tag: E-Day and Echo Weaver. Neon Abyss 2, also out October 8, is tagged only as Xbox Play Anywhere there, so treat any Game Pass listing for it as unconfirmed until it shows up in the catalog.
| Game | Release date | Listed as | Day-one Game Pass status (per Xbox sourcing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: E-Day | October 6, 2026 | Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, cloud | Confirmed – Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass (Sept 15 Xbox Wire) |
| Echo Weaver | October 8, 2026 | Game Pass / Xbox Play Anywhere | Tagged Game Pass in the Oct 2 Xbox Wire roundup |
| Neon Abyss 2 | October 8, 2026 | Xbox Play Anywhere | Not tagged Game Pass in the Oct 2 roundup |
| Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival | October 8, 2026 | Listed in Next Week on Xbox | Not tagged Game Pass |
| Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts | October 8, 2026 | Xbox Play Anywhere | Not tagged Game Pass |
If you plan your week around Game Pass, check the Game Pass section of the Xbox app on launch day before you assume any October 8 title other than Echo Weaver is included. “Releasing this week” and “included with your subscription” are not the same thing.
Who This Affects
- Game Pass Ultimate members: E-Day is included on October 6 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and through cloud gaming.
- PC Game Pass members: E-Day is included on October 6 on Windows PC through the Xbox app.
- Game Pass Essential and Premium members: The current console Game Pass tiers are Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Xbox’s Game Pass plans page lists new games on day one only for Ultimate and PC Game Pass; Premium gets new Xbox-published games within a year of launch. Don’t count on E-Day on October 6 with Essential or Premium.
- Anyone who wants online play on console: Xbox’s product page says online campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus, and other multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, sold separately. On console, Essential, Premium, and Ultimate all include online multiplayer, so buying the game alone doesn’t unlock those modes.
- Non-subscribers: You can buy the Standard or Premium Edition on Xbox, the Microsoft Store on Windows, or Steam.
Is E-Day console-exclusive or on PC and Steam?
Both. Xbox’s June 7 Games Showcase recap announced E-Day as an Xbox console exclusive and said it is not a timed exclusive. That covers consoles only: the same recap lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, and Play Anywhere, and the September 17 Xbox Wire post and the official product page add Steam next to the Microsoft Store on PC.
Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and cloud via Game Pass Ultimate. The product page also lists E-Day as Xbox Play Anywhere. One purchase through the Xbox or Microsoft Store covers both your console and Windows PC, and progress carries between them.
Edition Pricing and What Each Gets You
Prices come from the official Xbox product page as of October 4, 2026. They are U.S. dollar prices.
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass | Included with subscription | Day-one access on October 6; cloud play on Ultimate |
| Standard Edition | $69.99 | Full game, no early access |
| Premium Edition | $99.99 | Full game, up to 5 days early access, Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs, and 1,000 Iron |
| Premium Upgrade | $30 | Up to 5 days early access, Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs, and 1,000 Iron (for Game Pass members or Standard owners) |
Xbox describes three modes: a campaign, a reworked PvE mode called Horde Siege, and refined Versus PvP. That’s the official feature list. We haven’t seen independent verification of how any mode plays or performs.
How It Stacks Up
Against this week’s other releases. E-Day and Echo Weaver are the only October 6-8 games Xbox’s roundup tags for Game Pass. For Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, both cost nothing extra, while the other October 8 titles may require a purchase until Xbox says otherwise.
Against how you can get it. For a Game Pass Ultimate member, the real choice is $0 or $30. The $30 Premium Upgrade adds early access, the weapon pack, five seasonal customization packs, and 1,000 Iron, and it costs $39.99 less than buying the Standard Edition outright. The catch is timing. Early access started October 1 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific and the full launch is October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific, so buying the upgrade now gets you less than two days of early play instead of five.
Against other platforms. The current official listings name Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and cloud. Xbox’s June 7 recap calls E-Day an Xbox console exclusive, not a timed one, so there is no PlayStation 5 or Switch 2 version. On PC, Steam and the Microsoft Store both sell it, but only the Microsoft Store and Xbox versions carry Xbox Play Anywhere. Day-one Game Pass access on PC also runs through the Xbox app, not Steam.
Against earlier Gears games. Critic scores are in. Metacritic shows an 87 Metascore for the Xbox Series X version, based on 36 critic reviews as of October 5. ComicBook.com’s tally puts that above Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 (84 each) but below the original trilogy (94, 93, and 91). We don’t have sourced sales or performance numbers yet.
The Reaction
Critic reviews landed when early access opened on October 1, and they are broadly positive, as the 87 Metascore shows. ComicBook.com notes the early reviews did not include multiplayer, so Horde Siege and Versus impressions are still to come.
On X, most posts simply restate the news: E-Day on Game Pass and Play Anywhere on October 6. The few opinionated posts point the same way. Day-one Game Pass is the selling point, and some posters frame it as better value than full-price exclusives elsewhere.
Our Take
Verdict: Play it on Game Pass. If you already have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, E-Day is included on October 6. That’s confirmed by Xbox’s own September 15 post, and there’s no reason to pay $69.99.
Skip the $30 Premium Upgrade now unless you really want the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack and the bundled customization packs and Iron. Most of the five-day early access window has already passed.
If you don’t subscribe and want to own it, the reviews so far are strong, so the $69.99 Standard Edition is a reasonable buy if the campaign is what you want. Multiplayer wasn’t part of the early reviews, so if Horde Siege or Versus is your reason to buy, give it a few days after launch. If you want it on both console and PC, buy through the Xbox or Microsoft Store to get Play Anywhere.
For the other October 8 titles, Echo Weaver aside, don’t assume they’re on Game Pass. Check the catalog that day.
What to Do Next
Set up E-Day so it’s ready at 8:00 a.m. Pacific on October 6.
In the Xbox app on Windows
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the account tied to your Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription.
- Search for Gears of War: E-Day in the app’s search bar.
- Select Install. Pre-install has been open since September 29, so it should download now.
- Compare your PC with the minimum and recommended specs in the September 17 Xbox Wire post before launch day.
- Optional: select the Premium Upgrade on the game page if you want the remaining early access, the weapon pack, and the bundled customization packs and Iron for $30.
To play on a Series X|S console instead, go to My games & apps > Full library > Game Pass and install from there. If your internal drive is full, a Storage Expansion Card holds Series X|S-optimized games without moving them back first.
On the web (xbox.com)
- Go to the official E-Day product page and sign in.
- Confirm your edition and pricing. Subscribers should see the game marked as included with Game Pass.
- Use the remote install option to send the download to your Xbox Series X|S, if your console is set to allow it.
- Cloud players on Ultimate can launch from xbox.com/play on October 6 with an Xbox Wireless Controller connected to their PC or browser device.
Wrapping Up
Gears of War: E-Day is the headline day-one Game Pass title for October 6-8, with Echo Weaver also tagged for Game Pass on October 8. E-Day launches October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific, included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Neon Abyss 2, Hellraiser: Revival, and Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts are releasing that week, but Xbox’s roundup doesn’t tag them for Game Pass. Our honest read: subscribers should install now and skip the late upgrade, and campaign-focused buyers can go ahead on the strength of the reviews, while multiplayer fans may want to wait a few days.
