You want to customize your Xbox controller, but Xbox Accessories offers different settings for each model. Start by connecting your controller, creating a profile, and mapping its buttons.

What Is Xbox Accessories?

Xbox Accessories is Microsoft’s free controller setup app for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. It finds supported controllers. You can remap buttons, change vibration, update firmware, and manage profiles.

The settings you get depend on your controller. An Elite Series 2 supports paddles, hardware profile slots, stick-response curves, trigger ranges, Shift actions, and keyboard mappings. The Xbox Adaptive Controller supports flexible input mappings and compatible keyboard commands.

A standard Xbox Wireless Controller gets basic button remapping and a few preferences. Xbox Accessories doesn’t offer universal stick sensitivity or deadzone controls for this model. Use each game’s settings when those options are available.

Microsoft doesn’t list a verified macOS version in its documentation. Set up your profiles on a supported Xbox console or Windows PC.

Prerequisites

Make sure you have:

  • An Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11 PC
  • A supported Xbox controller
  • The free Xbox Accessories app
  • A data-capable USB cable, Bluetooth connection, or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows
  • Internet access for installing the app and downloading firmware
  • A physical or on-screen keyboard if you plan to assign keyboard keys
  • The controller’s optional paddles attached before mapping them

Step-by-Step Guide

Fix #1: Install Xbox Accessories on Windows

Xbox consoles normally include Xbox Accessories. On Windows, install it from Microsoft Store first.

  • Open Start and select Microsoft Store.
  • Click the Store search box.
  • Enter:

Xbox Accessories

  • Select Xbox Accessories published by Microsoft Corporation.
  • Click Get or Install.
  • Wait until the button changes to Open.
  • Click Open to launch the app.

You can also open the official Xbox Accessories Microsoft Store listing in a browser. Check the publisher so you don’t install an unrelated controller app.

For a command-line installation, open Windows Terminal and run:

winget install --id 9NBLGGH30XJ3 --source msstore

Expected result: Windows installs Xbox Accessories and adds it to the Start menu.

Fix #2: Open Xbox Accessories on an Xbox console

On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, you can open the app through your library or Settings. The Settings route is usually quicker.

  • Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  • Select My games & apps.
  • Select See all.
  • Open Apps.
  • Select Xbox Accessories.

The other route is Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.

This screen only appears on the console. Use Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories support page as the visual reference.

Expected result: Xbox Accessories opens and shows each connected supported controller.

For basic system-level remapping, you can also open Settings > Accessibility > Controller > Button mapping.

Fix #3: Connect and update the controller

Use a wired connection for the first setup and any firmware update. This avoids pairing trouble and keeps the connection steady.

  • Connect the controller to the console or PC with a data-capable USB cable.
  • Turn on the controller.
  • Open Xbox Accessories.
  • Select the controller shown on the main screen.
  • If an update prompt appears, select Update now.
  • Keep the controller connected until the update finishes.
  • Don’t close the app or unplug the cable during the update.

Bluetooth and an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows also work with compatible controllers. If wireless pairing isn’t ready, follow the separate guide at /how-to-connect-an-xbox-controller-to-pc.

Expected result: The correct controller appears without a warning, and Configure becomes available.

Fix #4: Create and name a controller profile

Profiles keep your layouts separate. That’s useful when several games or people share one controller. The number of profiles and hardware slots depends on the model.

  • Select the connected controller.
  • Click Configure.
  • Select New profile.
  • Enter a short name such as Racing, One-handed layout, or Shared profile.
  • Select Save or press Enter, based on the screen you see.
  • Select the new profile to start editing it.

Expected result: The named profile appears in the controller’s profile list.

To manage it later:

  • Select the pencil icon to rename or edit the profile.
  • Select the profile’s delete option to remove it.
  • Confirm the deletion when asked.
  • Keep at least one unchanged profile for a quick return to the original layout.

That untouched profile is worth keeping. It gives you a clean fallback if a custom layout feels awkward in menus.

Fix #5: Remap controller buttons

The same basic steps work on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10, and Windows 11. Change one or two buttons first. Test them before editing the full layout.

  • Select the controller in Xbox Accessories.
  • Choose Configure.
  • Open the profile you want to change.
  • Select Mapping or the button-mapping page.
  • Choose a physical input under the source control, such as A button.
  • Open Map to.
  • Choose the action that the source input should perform.
  • Repeat for each button you want to change.
  • Return to the profile screen when finished.
  • Confirm that this profile, not another profile, is active.
Button-mapping interface showing the source input selector, Map to selector, and Restore to default control

Expected result: The remapped button performs its new action while the correct profile is active. Menu prompts may still show the original button label. That mismatch can take a moment to get used to.

Fix #6: Configure Elite paddles and Shift actions

Paddle and Shift controls aren’t available on every controller. These steps apply to supported Elite controllers, including Elite Series 2.

  • Open the Elite controller’s profile.
  • Select Mapping.
  • Choose P1, P2, P3, or P4 as the source input.
  • Choose the button action for that paddle under Map to.
  • Repeat for every installed paddle you want to use.
  • To create an alternate layer, select a supported input and assign it as Shift.
  • Choose another input.
  • Set its Shift mode usage to the alternate action.
  • Save the profile and assign it to an active hardware slot.

Expected result: Each paddle works on its own. Shift actions work only while you hold the assigned Shift input.

Shift can add more commands to one profile, but it gives you another button combination to remember. I’d skip it unless the standard buttons and paddles don’t cover your needs.

Fix #7: Adjust supported stick and trigger controls

Xbox Accessories shows stick-response and trigger-range controls only for supported models, usually Elite controllers. Make small changes. Large changes can make aiming or acceleration feel jumpy.

Adjust the sticks

  • Open the supported controller’s profile.
  • Select the left or right stick.
  • Choose an available response curve or sensitivity option.
  • Adjust the shown curve or calculation setting in small steps.
  • Repeat for the other stick if needed.
  • Test the active profile in software that accepts controller input.

Adjust the triggers

  • Open the same profile.
  • Select the trigger configuration page.
  • Adjust the left trigger’s minimum and maximum range.
  • Adjust the right trigger’s minimum and maximum range.
  • Check that the active range responds as intended.
  • Return to the profile screen.

Expected result: The active Elite profile uses your chosen stick response and trigger ranges.

A standard Xbox Wireless Controller can’t use the full Elite stick-response or trigger-range tools. Use the game’s control menu for sensitivity or deadzone settings when available. If a stick moves without input, software settings won’t fix mechanical drift. See /how-to-fix-xbox-controller-drift.

Fix #8: Change or disable vibration

Vibration adds feedback, but strong rumble isn’t comfortable for everyone. You can lower it or turn it off for the active profile.

  • Open Xbox Accessories.
  • Select the controller.
  • Choose Configure.
  • Open the profile you want to adjust.
  • Select Vibration.
  • Lower the available vibration controls or turn vibration off.
  • Return to the profile list.
  • Confirm that the edited profile is active.

Expected result: Vibration uses the selected level when the active profile and software support it.

Fix #9: Assign and switch Elite hardware profiles

Elite Series 2 controllers can store custom profiles in hardware slots. These layouts travel with the controller, so Xbox Accessories doesn’t need to stay open.

  • Open Configure for the Elite controller.
  • Find the assignments for Slot 1, Slot 2, and Slot 3.
  • Select a slot.
  • Choose the named profile to assign to it.
  • Repeat for the other slots as needed.
  • Press the controller’s Profile button to switch slots.
  • Check the lit profile indicator to find the active slot.
  • Test the mapping before relying on it.

Expected result: The controller switches among assigned profiles while Xbox Accessories is closed. If a saved change seems inactive, check the slot assignment and the lit indicator.

Fix #10: Assign a keyboard key on supported controllers

Microsoft supports keyboard-key mapping on Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. The game or app must also accept keyboard input.

  • Connect a physical keyboard or enable the on-screen keyboard.
  • Open a profile for the Elite Series 2 or Xbox Adaptive Controller.
  • Select the controller input you want to change.
  • Open the Key tab.
  • Select Assign a key.
  • Press one non-modifier keyboard key.
  • Add Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or the Windows key as an optional modifier if needed.
  • Select Done.
  • Assign the profile to the active slot where needed.
  • Confirm that the target game or app supports keyboard controls.

Expected result: The mapped controller input sends the selected keyboard command in compatible software.

A correct mapping may seem unresponsive if the software ignores keyboard commands. Test the chosen key on a physical keyboard before changing the controller profile again.

Configuration

Build an accessibility-focused layout

There isn’t one ideal accessibility layout. Start with the input that’s hard to reach, hold, or press often. Then build the profile around that need.

  • Create a separate named profile.
  • Move frequent actions to easier-to-reach buttons or Elite paddles.
  • Avoid mapping key actions to inputs that need painful grip changes.
  • Use Shift mode only if holding a modifier is comfortable.
  • Reduce or disable vibration if it causes discomfort or distraction.
  • Change one mapping at a time.
  • Confirm each change before adding another.
  • Keep an unchanged profile available for menus or shared use.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller can pair Xbox Accessories mappings with connected switches and compatible external inputs. /xbox-accessibility-settings-guide covers more console accessibility options.

Restore the default layout

If a custom profile becomes confusing, restore that profile before deleting everything. It’s the fastest route back to the standard Xbox button layout.

  • Open the affected controller in Xbox Accessories.
  • Select Configure.
  • Open the affected profile.
  • Select Restore to default on the mapping page.
  • Confirm the reset if asked.
  • Activate the restored profile.
  • On an Elite controller, assign it to the slot you plan to use.

Expected result: Each physical button returns to its original Xbox action.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Fix #11: Activate a profile that was saved but does not work

Your custom profile is saved, but the buttons still use another layout. On an Elite controller, check the active hardware slot first.

  • Open Xbox Accessories.
  • Select the controller and choose Configure.
  • Open the edited profile.
  • Confirm that the intended mappings appear.
  • Assign the profile to the correct hardware slot if supported.
  • Press the controller’s Profile button until that slot is active.
  • Close any other remapping software.
  • Test the input again.

A profile can save without becoming active. Slot assignment is the usual reason an Elite layout doesn’t stick.

Fix #12: Reconnect a controller that is not detected

Xbox Accessories is open, but your controller doesn’t appear on the home screen. A charging-only cable is a common cause. It supplies power but doesn’t carry controller data.

  • Close Xbox Accessories.
  • Turn the controller off.
  • Connect it with a known data-capable USB cable.
  • Try another USB port if Windows still doesn’t detect it.
  • Turn the controller on.
  • Reopen Xbox Accessories.
  • If it’s still missing, right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  • Check Xbox Peripherals, Human Interface Devices, and Bluetooth for the controller or a warning icon.
  • Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
  • Restart Windows after the driver check.

Expected result: The controller appears on the Xbox Accessories home screen.

Fix #13: Update software when changes will not save or sync

Your mappings won’t save, sync, or stay active after you reconnect the controller. Update the system, app, and controller firmware before rebuilding several profiles.

  • Install pending Windows or Xbox system updates.
  • Open Microsoft Store on Windows.
  • Select Library.
  • Select Get updates.
  • Install any Xbox Accessories update.
  • Reconnect the controller by USB.
  • Open Xbox Accessories and install any offered firmware update.
  • Recreate the profile if only one profile is corrupted.

Microsoft’s controller update instructions explain the supported firmware process. The dedicated /how-to-update-an-xbox-controller guide also covers the available update routes.

Fix #14: Reset Xbox Accessories on Windows

Xbox Accessories still won’t keep changes after you reconnect the controller, install updates, and recreate the profile. Repair the app first. A full reset removes its local data.

  • Close Xbox Accessories.
  • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  • Find Xbox Accessories.
  • Open its three-dot menu or select the app.
  • Choose Advanced options.
  • Select Repair first.
  • Reopen the app and test it.
  • Return to Advanced options if the issue remains.
  • Select Reset.
  • Confirm the reset.
  • Reopen Xbox Accessories and reconnect the controller.
  • Recreate and reactivate the needed profile.

Expected result: Xbox Accessories starts with fresh local app data and finds the reconnected controller.

I’d save the reset for last. Repair keeps the app’s data, while Reset makes you rebuild and activate local profiles again.

A named profile in the correct active slot is the most reliable setup, especially on Elite controllers. Map the buttons first and test each change. Add Shift or response settings only when they solve a clear problem.

If USB reconnection, firmware updates, and an app reset still fail, contact Xbox Support. The controller, cable, or USB hardware may need service or replacement.
