No conversion menu, no code to type. As of August 31, 2026, this only works if you’re in the Xbox Insider Program, so if you’re not enrolled yet, that’s step one.
What Is Xbox Disc-to-Digital?
Microsoft announced Disc-to-Digital on August 26, 2026. It opened to Xbox Insiders five days later. There’s no separate “convert” menu or wizard to hunt for. Sign in, stay online, insert an eligible disc, and launch the game once. The console checks eligibility and adds a digital entitlement to your account automatically, typically surfacing a brief confirmation toast or a “Claim Digital License” prompt when it happens. The physical disc still works exactly as before. Nothing gets consumed or disabled.
This is a staged Insider test, not a full release. Microsoft says a broader rollout is coming “in the coming months.” There’s no confirmed date yet. Joining the Xbox Insider Program and picking a ring is necessary but not sufficient on its own — Microsoft is flighting the test gradually, so even enrolled Insiders on an eligible ring may not see it immediately. If you’re not enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program and on the right preview ring, you definitely won’t see this feature; if you are and still don’t see it, that’s expected during the staged rollout too, not a bug.

Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Confirm Your Console and Disc Are Eligible
Check that your console has a disc drive. Every Xbox One model and the Xbox Series X qualify. The Xbox Series S does not. Then confirm the disc is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X-era game. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs don’t work with this test, even though many of them play fine on newer hardware.

Step 2: Install the Xbox Insider Hub App
On the Xbox console (or a Windows PC), open the Microsoft Store and search for Xbox Insider Hub. Select Get to install the free app.
Step 3: Sign In and Join the Xbox Insider Program
Open Xbox Insider Hub and sign in with the Microsoft account tied to your Xbox console. Follow the on-screen prompts to accept the program terms and join the Xbox Insider Program.

Step 4: Select a Preview Ring That Includes Disc-to-Digital
Inside Xbox Insider Hub, go to Previews or Available Insider Content. Join a ring (flight) that lists the Disc-to-Digital test. Not every ring gets every test at the same time. Availability can vary by account and region, even among enrolled Insiders.

Step 5: Update Your Console
On the console you’ll use to claim entitlements, go to Settings > System > Updates & downloads and install any available system update. This applies the Insider preview build that includes Disc-to-Digital support.
Step 6: Verify You’re Signed In and Online
Confirm your Microsoft account is signed in and the console shows a connected network status. Disc-to-Digital verification happens against Microsoft’s servers. An offline console can’t claim anything.
Step 7: Insert the Eligible Disc
Insert your Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into the console’s disc drive. Wait for the console to recognize the disc and prompt you to install or launch it.

Select the game from your library or the disc-launch prompt and start it. While it loads, the console checks the disc against Microsoft’s servers. Step 9: Confirm the Digital Entitlement Was Added
Remove the disc and try launching the same game from your library without it inserted. If the entitlement claimed successfully, it launches digitally. You can also check My games & apps on the console dashboard to confirm the title shows as owned.

Configuration
There’s no settings menu for Disc-to-Digital itself. Signing in, staying online, and launching an eligible disc trigger the behavior automatically. Two things actually control your access:
- Xbox Insider Program enrollment: managed in Xbox Insider Hub; must be active to see the feature at all.
- Preview ring selection: also in Xbox Insider Hub; determines whether your specific account has been flighted into the Disc-to-Digital test yet.
Once a title is claimed, it behaves like any other entitlement in your library, with Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming benefits applying only where supported for that specific title. Where the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, the same license unlocks a Windows PC copy through the Xbox app on Windows. Where it’s in the Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog, you can stream it without the console or disc present, typically alongside an eligible Game Pass Ultimate subscription — neither benefit is guaranteed for every claimed title.
If Something Goes Wrong
Disc-to-Digital issues almost always trace back to enrollment, connectivity, or disc eligibility, not a broken console.
- Confirm Xbox Insider Hub shows you as an active member on a ring that includes the Disc-to-Digital test.
- Check for and install any pending console system update.
- Make sure the console is online and your Microsoft account is signed in before inserting the disc.
- Try a different eligible Xbox One or Series X disc to rule out a title-specific issue.
Common Issues
The prompt never appears when inserting a disc
Why it happens: Your account isn’t enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program, isn’t on a ring that includes this test, or Microsoft hasn’t expanded the test to your account or region yet.
Fix: Recheck enrollment status in Xbox Insider Hub, confirm the console installed the latest preview update, and keep in mind this is a staged rollout. Access can lag even among enrolled Insiders.
A specific disc doesn’t qualify
Why it happens: The test currently supports most, but not all, Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Some older pressings may lack the required metadata, and Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs are excluded outright.
Fix: Confirm the disc is genuinely Xbox One or Xbox Series X-era. If it is and still doesn’t work, there’s no manual override. Microsoft controls eligibility server-side and plans to expand supported titles over time.
No internet connection blocks the claim
Why it happens: The console has to verify the disc against Microsoft’s servers to register the entitlement, so the process fails offline.
Fix: Connect the console via Wi-Fi or a Cat6 Ethernet cable before inserting and launching the disc.
Digital access remains after selling or lending a disc
Why it happens: Once claimed, the entitlement is tied to your Microsoft account, not to the physical disc itself. The official Xbox announcement confirms the digital license is added to your account after the claim completes and that the physical disc keeps working as before; Microsoft’s announcement doesn’t address what happens if someone else later inserts the same disc into their own console, so treat that specific scenario as undocumented rather than confirmed.
Fix: No action needed to protect your access. Per Microsoft’s announcement, your account keeps the digital license once claimed, and the physical disc continues to work as before — so you’re free to sell, lend, or reuse the disc itself. What happens on the other end, if a buyer or borrower tries to claim the same disc on their own account, isn’t addressed in Microsoft’s announcement, so don’t assume it will or won’t work for them.
Tips and Hidden Features
- Check for Play Anywhere before expecting PC access: Not every disc title supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Look for the badge on the game’s store listing before assuming your claimed entitlement unlocks a Windows PC copy.
- Cloud gaming needs a subscription: Streaming a converted title through Xbox Cloud Gaming typically still requires an eligible Game Pass Ultimate subscription alongside the entitlement.
- Your digital entitlement stays with your account: Once claimed, the digital license belongs to your Microsoft account rather than the disc, per Microsoft’s announcement. Selling or lending the disc afterward doesn’t remove your account’s digital access to the title.
- Older-generation titles need a different path: For Xbox 360 or original Xbox games, check the Microsoft Store for a direct digital purchase or see if the title is included in Xbox Game Pass instead.
Wrapping Up
Once you’re enrolled, this feature just works: sign in, stay online, insert the disc, launch the game, done. Getting to that point is the real project. Xbox Insider Hub, active enrollment, and the right preview ring all have to line up first. Microsoft still hasn’t named a date for wider release.
