What happens to saves when games leave Xbox Game Pass? You lose subscription access to the game, but your installed files, local saves, Xbox cloud saves, and achievements normally stay put.

What Is Xbox Game Pass Catalog Access?

Xbox Game Pass catalog access is a temporary license that lets you launch an included game. The installation, license, save data, achievements, and downloadable content are separate parts of the setup.

The game can remain installed after its Game Pass license expires. When you launch it, you’ll usually see a purchase or license message. Buying a compatible edition or inserting a compatible Xbox disc restores access to your existing save. It doesn’t create a fresh save.

Prerequisites

Before the departure date, make sure you have:

  • The Microsoft or Xbox account that created the save you want
  • The Xbox app installed if you are following the Windows steps
  • A working internet connection
  • The exact title and departure date from an official Xbox notice
  • The original platform, storefront, launcher, and edition recorded
  • Enough time to launch the game and finish synchronization
  • A compatible digital license or disc if you want continued access
  • Access to the purchasing account when another household member owns the game

Warning: Don’t delete local or cloud saves before a Game Pass departure. Deleting data doesn’t create a backup, and a delete-everywhere option can remove the cloud copy too.

Step-by-Step Guide

Fix #1: Verify the Game Pass departure notice

  • Open an official Xbox Wire departure list in a browser. The September 2026 Game Pass update is an example; use the latest notice for the month you are checking.
  • Find the single game you want to keep using.
  • Record its exact title and stated departure date.
  • Check whether the notice applies to Xbox consoles, Windows PC, cloud gaming, or several of them.
  • Compare that platform with the copy you currently launch.
Close crop of Xbox Wire Leaving September 15 section. Show only the verified line Dead Cells (Cloud, Console, and PC). Crop other games and all headline/date/author text out. No invented game list. This September 1 2026 source is verified; Skyrim, Dishonored and Hollow Knight are NOT in its leaving list. If reference search cannot supply a suitable image, use the deployed detailed text-only fallback; the image still requires visual approval.

Expected result: You know which version is leaving and when its Game Pass license ends. Pay close attention to the platform. A console departure doesn’t automatically mean the Windows edition is also leaving, and the reverse is true too.

Fix #2: Confirm the account that owns the progress

  • Open the Xbox app on Windows.
  • Select your profile picture in the upper-left corner.
  • Check the displayed gamertag and Microsoft account.
  • Compare that gamertag with the profile that earned the game’s achievements.
  • On a shared household PC or Xbox, confirm which account created the save you want.
  • Keep that account signed in for the remaining steps.

The purchaser and save owner can be different people. Saves and achievements follow the account that played the game. The digital license belongs to the account that bought it.

Expected result: The Xbox app shows the account tied to the progress you want to keep.

Fix #3: Confirm the Windows edition and launcher

  • Open the Xbox app on Windows.
  • Select My Library.
  • Select the departing game.
  • Record the full product title and edition shown on its product page.
  • Check that the page identifies it as a Windows PC release.
  • Note whether the game opens a separate publisher launcher.
  • If another launcher opens, record the Xbox account and publisher account used by the game.

This detail can save you from buying the wrong copy. Steam, Epic Games Store, and publisher-launcher editions may each use a different save system. Matching titles alone don’t prove that saves can move between them.

Expected result: You’ve identified the exact Windows edition and save system that created your progress.

Fix #4: Synchronize the save before departure

  • Connect the Windows PC to the internet.
  • Open the Xbox app.
  • Verify that the save-owning account remains signed in.
  • Launch the departing game from its Xbox app product page.
  • Wait if a synchronization dialog appears.
  • Load the intended save only after synchronization finishes.
  • Use the game’s normal save command or reach its usual autosave point.
  • Return to the title screen if the game provides one.
  • Close the game normally.
  • Leave the Xbox app open briefly so final background activity can finish.

Give a visible synchronization process time to finish. Don’t restart Windows, disconnect the network, or end the game through Task Manager while it runs.

Expected result: Your latest supported save has synchronized while the original Game Pass license still works.

Fix #5: Leave saved-data controls alone

  • Don’t remove the game as part of save preparation.
  • Don’t open a save-management screen unless you’re diagnosing an existing problem.
  • If you inspect installed content, avoid every Delete, Remove, or Clear control.
  • If progress already appears missing, close the game before creating a new save.
  • Verify the account, edition, and launcher before changing any data.

On an Xbox console, the management path is My games & apps > See all > Games > highlight the game > Menu button > Manage game and add-ons. Open the saved-data area only to identify the profile. Don’t delete anything there.

Expected result: The installed files and existing save remain untouched before the catalog license expires.

Fix #6: Check whether the household already owns the game

  • Open the departing game’s product page in the Xbox app.
  • Look for Owned, Install, or another ownership label.
  • Select the edition chooser if the page offers several editions.
  • Check each household purchaser’s order history if ownership remains unclear.
  • On a disc-capable Xbox Series X or Xbox One, check for a compatible physical disc.
  • Confirm that the disc matches the required Xbox generation and edition.

An Xbox Series S can’t use a physical game disc. A Windows PC also can’t use an Xbox console disc as its license.

You normally won’t need to reinstall a game when the existing installation matches your new digital license. You may need a reinstall if you buy a different edition or the installed files are damaged.

Expected result: You know whether an existing digital purchase or compatible Xbox disc can restore access without another purchase.

Fix #7: Buy the compatible base game or edition

  • Return to the game’s product page in the Xbox app.
  • Match the title, Windows platform, publisher, and edition with the details you recorded.
  • Check whether the selected product is the base game, a bundle, an upgrade, or an add-on.
  • Open the edition details and confirm that it includes the required base game.
  • Review the current price and purchasing account.
  • Select Buy only after the platform and edition match.
  • Complete checkout through the Microsoft Store window.
  • Return to the Xbox app and confirm that the page now shows an ownership or installation control.

If you’d prefer a graphical shortcut to the Microsoft Store, press Windows key + R, enter this URI, and press Enter:

ms-windows-store:

This is the step worth slowing down for. A cheap add-on or edition upgrade won’t replace the missing base-game license unless its store page says the base game is included.

Expected result: The correct account owns a compatible base-game license for the same Windows release.

Fix #8: Check base-game and downloadable-content licenses

  • Open the game in My Library.
  • Select its management or add-ons control.
  • Identify the base game as a separate item.
  • Identify each expansion, season pass, or cosmetic pack separately.
  • Confirm that the purchasing account owns the required base game.
  • Install any compatible owned add-ons after the base game is available.

An expansion doesn’t include the base game unless the store description specifically says the bundle contains both. Once the Game Pass base-game license ends, owned downloadable content can’t launch on its own.

Expected result: The base game and any required add-ons appear as owned or available through the intended accounts.

Fix #9: Launch the purchased copy after departure

  • Connect the PC to the internet.
  • Sign in to the Xbox app with the account that created the save.
  • If another household account bought the game, make sure it provides a valid license.
  • Open My Library.
  • Select the exact compatible edition.
  • Select Play.
  • Wait for every synchronization message to finish.
  • Check the available save slots before selecting one.
  • Open the expected save only after its date and progress look correct.
  • Stop immediately if the game offers to replace newer cloud data with an unexpected empty or older save.

Don’t rush past a cloud-save conflict screen. Read the dates and progress details before choosing a copy, since the wrong choice may replace newer progress.

Expected result: The compatible purchased edition launches through the save-owning account and loads your synchronized progress. Achievements remain attached to that account when the game leaves Game Pass.

Configuration

Use these account and license choices to keep access predictable.

SettingRecommended configuration
Playing accountUse the Xbox account that created the save and achievements
Purchasing accountRecord which household member owns the digital license
Internet connectionStay online before departure and during the first launch after purchase
Windows editionBuy the same Xbox app or Microsoft Store edition unless cross-save support is officially confirmed
Publisher accountUse the same linked account when the game requires a third-party launcher
Base-game licenseConfirm ownership separately from expansions and other add-ons
Existing installationKeep it installed if convenient; reinstall only when the purchased package requires it or files are damaged
Cloud gamingTreat it as catalog access, not ownership or a permanent copy

Cloud gaming access can end when a title leaves the applicable catalog. Buying a console or PC copy doesn’t guarantee that the game will remain available through Xbox cloud gaming.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Fix #10: Stop before overwriting apparently missing progress

  • Close the game if it starts with no save or unexpected progress.
  • Don’t create a new save in the same slot.
  • Don’t delete local data or choose a delete-everywhere option.
  • Confirm the signed-in gamertag.
  • Confirm the original platform, edition, storefront, and launcher.
  • Reconnect the PC to the internet.
  • Restart the Xbox app.
  • Launch the compatible edition again.
  • Allow synchronization to finish without interruption.
  • Contact Xbox Support if the correct save still doesn’t appear.

An empty save list can point to the wrong account or edition. This cautious order protects any remaining local or cloud copy while you check for that mismatch.

Fix #11: Resolve an installed game that still asks for a purchase

  • Confirm that the title has passed its departure date.
  • Check whether the Xbox app product page says the game is owned.
  • Verify that the purchasing account completed checkout.
  • Compare the purchased edition with the installed edition.
  • Restart the Xbox app.
  • Restart Windows.
  • Launch the game from the owned product page instead of an old shortcut.
  • Check the official Xbox service status if the license is still unavailable.
  • Contact Xbox Support with the order details if ownership remains missing.

Installed files don’t bypass a license check. If the Xbox app still shows Buy after checkout, focus on the purchasing account and edition before reinstalling a large game.

Fix #12: Handle a save that does not appear in another PC launcher

  • Stop before creating or importing new progress.
  • Check the publisher’s official documentation for cross-save support.
  • Confirm whether cross-save requires a linked publisher account.
  • Compare the Xbox app edition with the Steam, Epic Games Store, or publisher-launcher edition.
  • Return to the original Xbox app or Microsoft Store edition if cross-save is unsupported.
  • Keep the original save files unchanged while testing compatibility.

An Xbox console save works on Windows only when the game and edition support the required Xbox save or cross-progression system. Never assume cross-save support from the game’s title alone.

Fix #13: Restore access with a physical disc

  • Confirm that the game has an Xbox disc release compatible with your console.
  • Use an Xbox Series X or another compatible disc-capable Xbox; Xbox Series S can’t read discs.
  • Insert the disc.
  • Allow any required update to finish.
  • Sign in with the account that created the save.
  • Launch the matching edition.
  • Wait for Xbox save synchronization to finish.
  • Keep the disc inserted whenever the console requests it for license verification.

The disc supplies the console license, while your Xbox account brings back the related save and achievements. Keep that disc nearby because the console may check it each time you play.

Expected result: The matching disc restores console access, and the save-owning account loads the existing progress.

Fix #4 is the best move before a game leaves: launch it online and let the latest save synchronize. After that, buy only the matching platform and edition if you want continued access.

If your progress doesn’t appear, leave every save-deletion control alone. Recheck the account, edition, storefront, and launcher, then contact Xbox Support before risking the cloud copy.
